BIO
My background in computers began in high school in 1981. It was there that I learned basic programming (on a 16k Radio Shack TRS-80 with a cassette-tape drive). I did my first color graphics on an Apple II shortly there after. Throughout high school and into college, I watched as personal computers became more and more powerful. I dabbled with several different types of computers including: Commodore, Amiga, TI, Mac and eventually the modern day PC.
The first PC I owned was an IBM XT (a 12 mhz 186 !) that I purchased for $2k in 1988. I learned MS-dos and an early version of Windows and used it to write songs (midi), keep up my band's mailing list, make fliers and create simple graphics. As time went on I got more and more involved with what a computer can do and was eager to learn everything that I could. It wasn't long before I learned about upgrades and soon came the color monitor, laser printer, modem, etc. I watched as the 286, 386 and 486 came out, but I was waiting until there was a computer that could do everything that I was imagining. In 1991 I was getting into some cool uses for my modem and I discovered Prodigy. Before the days of the Internet as we know it, I was online every day checking the weather, the news, chatting with strangers (none of my friends were online) and shopping with my state-of-the-art 2600 baud modem. It wasn't until 1994 that I discoverd AOL and the joys of e-mail, chatrooms, downloading, etc. Quickly the Internet started to consume me with possibilities. Enter Windows 95, the Pentium processor and the CD recorder! Finally I could create all of the things that I wanted to right in my living room. I purchased my first powerful PC in 1996 and quickly began recording my first CD, scanning images, using Photoshop and the rest is history.
When I purchased my first Pentium in 1996, I was online for hours a day learning all that I could about the Internet. I received an e-mail from a stranger on AOL (he found me using the advanced member search) that asked me to play the drums on his record. I was very eager to learn more about this prospect and began trading e-mails with him. After a few weeks, we decided to meet and I was in awe of him when I saw his dual PC networked computer workstation. He was building Websites, recording music, burning CDs, creating animations and doing all of the things that I wanted to learn. I proceeded to ask him to be my mentor and teach me all that I could possibly absorb. It wasn't long before I built my first personal site and one for my band (Urban Dread). Shortly after that, everybody I knew wanted me to help them with their sites and I decided that I found a new niche in the wonderful world of the Web Development.
Today I see the Internet as a tool that can be useful for everyone in any way that they see fit. I personally can't function without it. Whether you are into gaming, music, art, graphics, education or research, the tools are out there so learn how to use them. Anybody with a pc can do what I can do. With the right skills the possibilities are endless.
